An award celebrating the moral courage and community spirit of Gr. 4-7 students.
The Fearless Girl Award (FGA) was inspired by the fearless girl statue, a 4-foot high bronze sculpture (shown above), that is displayed throughout the world as a symbol of female empowerment and strength.
Can someone actually be fearless? Not likely, and that's a good thing - YOU should be afraid of that deadly, poisonous snake! The good news is that ANYONE, by choice, can develop an attitude of strength and fearlessness in standing up for what they believe in, AND in committing to kindness in their community and in the world.
The FGA is a part of the Boyd Social Justice Lift Project, an initiative aimed at lifting up people and groups in our community through acts of equity and kindness.
What is an act of equity? It's an action that helps those that need it most, and an understanding that we do not all start from the same place in life, and that sometimes we should reduce these imbalances.
Why the FGA? In recent years, adolescent females have experienced increased mental health challenges. Additionally, the Boyd Social Justice Class feels that young females today still face lingering social expectations about what it means to be a female. Developing an attitude of fearlessness which says, “Hey, this is authentically who I am!” is what the FGA is all about.
Nominations will be reviewed by the Fearless Girl Selection Committee, made up of a dozen Grade 11/12 Boyd students. The committee will form its decisions using a scoring rubric, and may reach out to nominators if more information is required.
Nominations close on February 10, and the three 2023 FGA winners will be announced in late-February!
*Note: The committee plans to acknowledge nominees that did not win (‘runners-up’) on our website
The three winners will receive a framed award certificate and acrylic glass trophy (delivered to your school by the selection committee). PLUS, your teacher will receive a $100 cheque to be used toward a 'pizza party lunch' for you and your classmates!
Absolutely anyone who knows a Fearless Girl (such as, students, parents, or teachers)!
